Dustin’s Question or Topic

Dustin is from Las Vegas. He has a very deep passion for being an entrepreneur and has been building businesses for about a decade – he has been into publishing, e-commerce, private labeling, a little bit of manufacturing, dry cleaning, and he recently invested in a travel franchise that is one of the worst-hit industries during the pandemic. He asked Gary what’s the one thing that Gary learned that he wished he understood when he just started his journey as an entrepreneur.

Gary’s Story and Advices

Gary learned that his greatest vulnerability was that he valued positivity so much that it skewed too far in a way that he is no longer able to give critical feedback often enough. This leads him to not be as frank as he needs to be as a leader. And because of this, the people during the 20 years of his career were surprised, shocked, or appalled by being fired, because he didn’t give good feedback during the process. Kindness and compassion are his macro-strength but are his micro vulnerability as well. So it needs to be rounded out with candor and feedback.
