Jamie’s Question or Topic

Jamie is a cosmetologist and costume designer. As a parent, she picks a word her kids should practice every year. This 2020, Jamie picked gratitude as she thinks a lot about instant gratification because of how technology makes people’s lives easier. Her question for Gary is on how to show her kids that character.

Gary’s Story and Advices

Gary recalls the past and he finds it funny because his generation didn’t have the type of technology that millennials currently have. His generation had a VCR  and their grandparents thought they were lucky. They had Nintendo and their parents thought that was crazy because they had to go to the arcade.

For Gary, getting kids to be grateful shouldn’t be based on making them feel lucky about what they have because that is the reality. Gratitude comes from de-valuing things other than health and happiness. For him, it is also about clapping up and making a bigger deal of spending time together.

Parents are not patient about the deposits they’re making with kids. They want instant results all the time, but that’s not how gratitude works. If the family spends time together and celebrates the right things, those activities will be instilled in the kids’ minds. The key is to be consistent with those activities over the years and continue instilling good values. The results are not instant, but when the kids are in their twenties and thirties, that’s when parents can see the results of their good work and their kids will thank them for it.
